Activa, our most demanded program, is a combination of morning classes with afternoon excursions around the city of Quito: visits guided to sites of cultural, historical or recreational interest such as an indigenous marketplace, the colonial architecture, a theatre show… Everyday there is a new activity!
San Francisco de Quito, Capital of Ecuador, stands at an altitude of 2850m on the Andes range. Settled in a valley at the foot of the volcano Pichincha, Quito always has a spring-like climate, and nearby snow-capped volcanoes Cayambe, Antisana and Cotopaxi can be seen from the city on clear days. Quito has a land area of 12,000 square Km. and a population of 1'520.000 inhabitants: mestizos, indigenous, white, African-Ecuadorian.
Quito was founded in 1534 by Spaniard conqueror Sebastián de Benalcázar over the ruins of an important city of the Incan Empire and even a more ancient site of earlier cultures who knew this was the exact location of the equatorial line. Today, Quito is one of the most beautiful cities in the Americas; it has the best preserved, most extensive historic downtown in Latin-America, reason why the United Nations have declared the city as a "Cultural Heritage of Humanity."
SAMPLE LIST OF ACTIVITIES:
Mercado indígena de Saquisilí ( Saquisilí Indigenous marketplace )
This colorful and traditional fair takes place every Thursday morning. Indigenous people commercialize artisanship and the products of the area plus a variety of animals: wild pigs, llamas, sheep/goats and cattle. A lot of business is done here and it is a good opportunity for you to practice your bargain abilities!
La Catedral (Colonial Cathedral)
Here you can find an interesting collection of sculptures and paintings by old masters of the Quito art style. As in most Ecuadorian and Latin American churches, many styles were used in the construction of the Cathedral: late Gothic in the arches, Moorish in the ceilings, Baroque in the main altar, Neoclassic style in the choir.
Teleférico (cable car)
Constructed on the skirts of the Pichincha volcano, the tour takes you 2.500 linear meters to an altitude of 4.050 meters above sea level in approximately 10 minutes. From here you can enjoy a majestic view of the city, the valleys and the snow-capped mountains.
Mitad del Mundo (The Middle of the World)
Here you can step with one foot on the Northern Hemisphere and the other on the Southern Hemisphere; other amusing tricks occur at latitude zero, like an egg standing on its round end! This popular tourist site is located approximately 15 kilometers from Quito and has tourist complex including an Ethnographic museum.
Guayasamín Foundation
This gallery was created by the world-famous Ecuadorian artist Oswaldo Guayasamín to house and publicly display his heritage of over 200 pieces, as well as a precolumbian art collection and a colonial art collection. Due to his outstanding artistic gift to transcribe powerful emotions onto his canvases, Oswaldo Guayasamín's paintings and murals have been exhibited in numerous European and American countries.
Museo Nacional del Banco Central ( Central Bank Museum )
Here you can find a variety of exhibits from ancient artifacts and pottery to contemporary art.
There are five main sections in the museum; the best known is the Archeology Room, featuring artifacts from our culture dating back to precolumbian times.
The Gold Room has a nice collection of prehispanic gold objects, the Colonial Art Room and the Republican Art Room, hold a good cross-section of work from those periods.
Quito Colonial ( Old Town )
Your private teacher will guide you through narrow and lively streets in the heart of historic old town. Highlights are churches, museums, national monuments and ancient buildings with stone carved facades built by the Spanish conquerors.
Activa program also includes other activities such as cooking delicious Ecuadorian dishes or to learn with a professional how to dance tropical rhythms.
